Summertime Healthy Eating Entertaining Tips

Islanders love summer and all the food that goes along with it! When it comes to entertaining Islanders usually enjoy serving fresh seafood, creamy starch based salads and homemade white rolls. However, eating these foods will only help to pack on the pounds.
If you enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages to fight off the summer heat, try to limit your consumption. All alcohol breaks down into sugar within the body. Your lowest caloric options are wine, light beer, diet cooler or a shot of hard liquor mixed with soda water and fresh lime. Normally I never recommend diet pop, but if your drinking alcohol that is the only exception.
BBQing can bre a healthy way to cook animal protein. Never char meat or eat any black markings caused bu the BBQ as they may be cancer causing. Experiment with new vegetables salad recipes with low fat dressing. Use local vegetables when in season. To create a lower fat side dish try making pasta or rice salad instead of potato salad. And enjoy the long days and cool nights, for summer never lasts long enough.

Summer Time Recipe- Zucchini Ranch Slaw

Are you sick of eating the same boaringsalad day in and day out? Try this new coleslaw recipe, compliments of Positive Change Nutrition, www.rachellewood.ca . Zucchini is a refershing replacement for cabbage, and the ranch dressing gives the salad a tasty spin.

2 medium zucchini, shredded and squeezed dry
1/2 c chopped onion
1 1/2 c shredded carrots
5 TBSP low fat Ranch dressing
In a bowl combine vegetables and mix well. Pour salad dressing over top. Serve and enjoy!

Please note the office will be closed from June 15- 19 for summer holidays. We have a 24 hour phone call or 48 hour email cancelation policy. For the summer months phone calls are the prefered method of communication within the office. If you miss an appointment with out sufficient notice you will be charged a $20 missed appointment fee.
